The $$S$$ = 1/2 Heisenberg linear chain antiferromagnet is the simplest spin model; nevertheless it serves as a platform for various quantum many-body phenomena. Here, we report the magnetic behavior of a quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet KCuPO$$_{4}$$$$cdot$$H$$_{2}$$O. A long-range commensurate antiferromagnetic order with ordered moment 0.31(1) $$mu_{rm{B}}$$ per spin occurs at $$T_{rm{N}}$$ = 11.7(1) K. Above $$T_{rm{N}}$$, the inelastic neutron excitation is characterized by a two spinon continuum. The intrachain interaction $$J$$ and interchain interaction $$|J'|$$ are estimated to be 172 K and 4.25(4) K, respectively; thus the ratio of the $$|J'|$$/$$J$$ = 0.0247(3). At lower energies, below $$T_{rm{N}}$$, a spin gap is observed in the dispersive excitations. These results are consistent with characteristics observed in weakly interacting $$S$$ = 1/2 Heisenberg chain system.

$${it S}$$ = 1/2 Heisenberg $${it J}$$$$_{1}$$-$${it J}$$$$_{2}$$ chain antiferromagnets have been investigated extensively due to their exotic magnetic states. Here, we report the magnetic behavior of birchite Cd$$_{2}$$Cu$$_{2}$$(PO$$_{4}$$)$$_{2}$$SO$$_{4}$$$$cdot$$5H$$_{2}$$O and its effective spin model. Experimental studies by magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, heat capacity, and $$mu$$SR measurements indicate the absence of long-range order down to 0.4 K. Theoretical studies reveal that birchite is a model compound for the $${it J}$$$$_{1}$$-$${it J}$$$$_{2}$$ antiferromagnetic chain: the intrachain interactions $${it J}$$$$_{1}$$ and $${it J}$$$$_{2}$$ are antiferromagnetic and their magnitude is about 100 times larger than the interchain interactions. The magnitude of $${it J}$$$$_{2}$$ is two to three times larger than that of $${it J}$$$$_{1}$$, thus the spin gap is expected to be only a few percent of that of $${it J}$$$$_{1}$$. The temperature dependence of the specific heat shows a broad peak at about 1 K ($$simeq$$ 0.036 $${it J}$$$$_{1}$$), which suggests the presence of a spin gap.

Spin dynamics of the spin-1/2 kagome-lattice antiferromagnet Cs$$_{2}$$Cu$$_{3}$$SnF$$_{12}$$ was studied using high-resolution, time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering. The flat mode, a characteristic of the frustrated kagome antiferromagnet, and the low-energy dispersive mode, which is dominated by magnons, can be well described by the linear spin-wave theory. However, the theory fails to describe three weakly dispersive modes between 9 and 14 meV. These modes could be attributed to two-spinon bound states, which decay into free spinons away from the zone center and at a high temperature, giving rise to continuum scattering.

We report the neutron scattering results on magnetic orderings and excitations in Ba$$_{2}$$CoTeO$$_{6}$$ composed of two almost isolated subsystems A and B, which are described as an $${S = 1/2}$$ triangular Heisenberg-like antiferromagnet and a frustrated honeycomb Ising-like antiferromagnet, respectively. It was found that the excitation spectra of both subsystems are well separated and independent of each other. The excitation spectrum of subsystem A is composed of two single-magnon branches with roton-like minima at the M point and a clearly structured intense continuum, as similarly observed in Ba$$_{3}$$CoSb$$_{2}$$O$$_{9}$$, which is strongly indicative of spinon excitations. Dispersion curves for subsystem B can be described by linear spin wave theory within the third-neighbor exchange interaction.

$$q$$=0 long-range magnetic order in centennialite CaCu$$_{3}$$(OD)$$_{6}$$Cl$$_{2}$$ $$cdot$$ 0.6D$$_{2}$$O; A Spin-$$frac{1}{2}$$ perfect kagome antiferromagnet with $$J_{1}$$-$$J_{2}$$-$$J_{d}$$

Crystal and magnetic structures of the mineral centennialite CaCu$$_{3}$$(OD)$$_{6}$$Cl$$_{2}$$ $$cdot$$ 0.6D$$_{2}$$O are investigated by means of synchrotron X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction measurements complemented by density functional theory (DFT) and pseudofermion functional renormalization group (PFFRG) calculations. In CaCu$$_{3}$$(OD)$$_{6}$$Cl$$_{2}$$ $$cdot$$ 0.6D$$_{2}$$O, Cu$$^{2+}$$ ions form a geometrically perfect kagome network with antiferromagnetic $$J_{1}$$. No intersite disorder between Cu$$^{2+}$$ and Ca$$^{2+}$$ ions is detected. CaCu$$_{3}$$(OD)$$_{6}$$Cl$$_{2}$$ $$cdot$$ 0.6D$$_{2}$$O enters a magnetic long-range ordered state below $$T_{rm N}$$ = 7.2 K, and the $$q$$=0 magnetic structure with negative vector spin chirality is obtained. The ordered moment at 0.3 K is suppressed to 0.58(2)$$mu$$B. Our DFT calculations indicate the presence of antiferromagnetic $$J_{2}$$ and ferromagnetic $$J_{d}$$ superexchange couplings of a strength which places the system at the crossroads of three magnetic orders (at the classical level) and a spin-$$frac{1}{2}$$ PFFRG analysis shows a dominance of $$q$$=0 type magnetic correlations, consistent with and indicating proximity to the observed $$q$$=0 spin structure. The results suggest that this material is located close to a quantum critical point and is a good realization of a $$J_{1}$$-$$J_{2}$$-$$J_{d}$$ kagome antiferromagnet.

Spin correlations of the frustrated pyrochlore oxide Tb$$_{2+x}$$Ti$$_{2-x}$$O$$_{7+y}$$ have been investigated by using inelastic neutron scattering on single-crystalline samples (x = -0.007, 0.000, and 0.003), which have the putative quantum-spin-liquid (QSL) or electric-quadrupolar ground states. Spin correlations, which are notably observed in nominally elastic scattering, show short-range correlations around $$Gamma$$ points, tiny antiferromagnetic Bragg scattering at L and $$Gamma$$ points, and pinch-point-type structures around $$Gamma$$ points. The short-range spin correlations were analyzed using a random-phase approximation (RPA) assuming the paramagnetic state and two-spin interactions among Ising spins. These analyses have shown that the RPA scattering intensity well reproduces the experimental data using temperature- and x-dependent coupling constants of up to tenth-neighbor site pairs. This suggests that no symmetry breaking occurs in the QSL sample and that a quantum treatment beyond the semiclassical RPA approach is required. Implications of the experimental data and the RPA analyses are discussed.

Rb$$_2$$Cu$$_2$$Mo$$_3$$O$$_{12}$$ is a one-dimensional quantum spin system with spin frustration. The magnetic ground state of this system has been expected to be incommensurate spin-singlet from a theoretical study. Furthermore, it was recently reported that this system exhibited ferroelectricity under a magnetic field. We carried out $$mu$$SR studies on this system to understand the magnetic properties. A slow muon spin relaxation due to nuclear dipoles is observed in the whole measured temperatures ranging from 0.06 K to 250 K, indicating that no magnetic ordering. The result suggests that the system shows a spin-singlet ground state. Furthermore, it was found that the distribution of the internal magnetic field were slightly enhanced below 10 K. This temperature dependence resembles that of the electric polarization observed in the magnetic field. It may indicate that some local anomaly of charge/spin related to the ferroelectricity is detected by a microscopic probe.

Employing mainly numerical methods, we explore the ground-state phase diagram of an anisotropic S=1/2 ladder, in which leg interactions are uniform and isotropic, while rung interactions are alternating and have a common Ising-type anisotropy. We determine the phase diagrams in some typical cases.

By use of mainly the exact diagonalization and the level spectroscopy method, we investigate the ground-state phase diagrams of the S=1/2 distorted diamond type quantum spin chain with the monomer-monomer interactions and ferromagnetic interactions. The magnetization plateau at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization was revealed to vanish in the region where the ferromagnetic interaction is rather strong.

The magnetization process of the spin-S Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice is studied by the numerical-diagonalization method. Our numerical-diagonalization data for small finite-size clusters with S=1, 3/2, 2 and 5/2 suggest that a magnetization plateau appears at one-third of the height of the saturation in the magnetization process irrespective of S. We discuss the S dependences of the edge fields and the width of the plateau in comparison with recent results by real-space perturbation theory.
